How we work

Our approach

Calm, insightful care

We offer a calm, thoughtful approach that prioritises understanding the whole person within the context of relationships, history and daily life.
Sessions are practical and reflective, supporting you to make sense of patterns, develop insight and build capacity.
Our work is guided by respect, curiosity, and a commitment to creating a space where your preferences and lived experience are honoured and you feel safe to explore, grow, and move toward the life you want.

Neurodiversity-affirming
We celebrate different ways of thinking, learning and experiencing the world. Rather than focusing on deficits, we recognise the strengths that come with being neurodivergent and support you in building a life that works for you.
Trauma-informed
We understand the impact that trauma and adversity can have on the mind and body. We create a safe, calm space where you are heard, your pace is respected and healing can begin through trust and stability.
Evidence-based
Our services are grounded in the latest psychological research and clinical best practice, while also respecting individual lived experience. We use what works. We adapt proven strategies to each person’s unique strengths, needs and goals.
Collaborative
We work together with clients, families and supports to create treatment plans that feel safe, achievable and meaningful. Your voice guides the process. We listen, adapt and make decisions as a team.
What we do

Services

Individual Therapy

One-on-one sessions tailored to your unique needs
We support children, adolescents and adults to better understand themselves, strengthen their wellbeing and build their capacity in ways that honour their identity and neurotype. Sessions can be offered in-person in Albany or via secure telehealth anywhere in Australia. Services can be funded by the NDIS, Medicare or privately.

Assessment

Comprehensive evaluations to guide diagnosis and support
Our assessments explore how you learn, communicate and navigate the world, helping to clarify strengths and challenges that may benefit from support. We use neurodiversity-affirming tools, respectful practices and clear explanations every step of the way. Assessment results are translated into meaningful recommendations that improve real-life outcomes.

Parent Support

Helping parents and caregivers feel more confident and connected
We provide guidance for parents and caregivers seeking to understand and support their child’s development, behaviour and wellbeing. Sessions focus on practical strategies grounded in compassion and connection, never blame or judgement. We work with you to build confidence, capacity and calmer family rhythms.

About our psychologist

Empathy with expertise

Anita Hamersley is a psychologist and founder of Real Calm. Anita draws on her training and lived experience to provide compassionate, attuned and evidence-informed care to children, adolescents and adults. Anita has a special interest in autism and is a member of the WA Autism Diagnostician’s Forum and a founding member of the League of Autistic Psychologists and Affirming Colleagues. She engages in regular peer consultation and professional development to ensure her practice remains current. As a mother of one, Anita brings warmth and genuine care to her work, creating a space where clients feel safe, understood and supported.

Before becoming a psychologist, Anita worked as a high school teacher and held pastoral care roles, experiences that deepened her desire to provide meaningful support to people and inspired her to pursue psychology.
